Why Local History Matters
Grand Rapids grew from a fur-trading post -- Joseph and Magdalene La Framboise ran one here from 1806, and French trader Louis Campau established another in 1826 -- into a city incorporated in 1850. Its lumber-rich site along the Grand River's rapids fed a furniture industry that earned Grand Rapids worldwide recognition as the 'Furniture Capital of America' in 1876, staffed heavily by Dutch, German, and Polish immigrant craftsmen who built entire neighborhoods of housing to match.
What That Means for the Work Today
That furniture-era housing boom left Grand Rapids with entire blocks of homes built to match the window openings and sash proportions common in the late 1800s and early 1900s, concentrated in neighborhoods like Heritage Hill -- one of the largest urban historic districts in the country, with roughly 1,300 homes dating from 1844. A window-replacement plan in one of those homes has to account for original opening sizes that a modern standard window often won't match without custom framing.
