From an 1834 Settlement to a Lakeside Resort Town
The Reed family arrived from New York in 1834 to settle what became East Grand Rapids, one of the oldest suburbs in Kent County and originally part of Paris Township. By the 1870s, Reeds Lake had become a popular day-trip resort for Grand Rapids residents, drawing crowds for picnicking, boating, and swimming well before the area was primarily residential.

Residents incorporated the Village of East Grand Rapids in 1891 to gain local control of water and fire service, becoming a home-rule city in 1926 at roughly 1,300 people, and the bulk of home construction followed in two waves -- the 1920s and the 1950s -- each with its own standard window opening and sash style.
