From Paris Township Farmland to a 1967 Incorporation
Kentwood began as Paris Township, a farming community first settled by Barney Burton in the early 1800s, and stayed under township government until 1967, when more than 6,000 residents voted to incorporate their own city after Grand Rapids refused to extend water and sewer service to a proposed township shopping center. First mayor Peter M. Lamberts chose the name Kentwood, after the local Kentwood Public Schools, over Plaster Creek and Paris.
